Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer from Genoa who completed four transatlantic voyages sponsored by Spain between 1492 and 1504, initiating European exploration and colonization of the Americas. He died on 20 May 1506 in Valladolid, Spain, at the age of 54, still believing he had reached the outskirts of Asia. His last words echo Christ’s own on the cross, commending his spirit to God.
