Henry VIII was King of England and Ireland from 1509 until his death, most famous for his six marriages and his break from the Roman Catholic Church, which triggered the English Reformation and the dissolution of the monasteries. He died on 28 January 1547 at the Palace of Whitehall. His reported last words, invoking the monks whose houses he had dissolved, have long been read as an ironic, unsettled reckoning with his own reign.
