Joan of Arc was a French peasant girl who, claiming to receive divine guidance through visions, led French forces to several key victories during the Hundred Years’ War, most notably at Orléans, helping secure the coronation of Charles VII. She was captured in 1430 and tried for heresy by Bishop Pierre Cauchon. On 30 May 1431, at about nineteen years old, she was burned at the stake in Rouen, asking that a cross be held before her eyes until the end.
