Michel de Nostredame, known as Nostradamus, was a French apothecary, physician, and astrologer famous for his collection of prophetic quatrains, Les Prophéties, which brought him fame and patronage from nobility including Catherine de’ Medici. By 1566 severe gout had progressed to edema, and on the evening of 1 July he reportedly told his secretary Jean de Chavigny he would not be found alive at sunrise. The next morning, 2 July 1566, he was found dead beside his bed — his final prophecy, about himself, proving true.
